It is the correct version, however there are some things we'd like to see in a portal before it is implemented:
1. No excessive sql queries or template edits. 2. Configurable blocks and on/off via the ACP.
Have yet to find one that meets our needs. I'm not above developing or having one developed custom for us if need be, but would much rather it be something supported by the phpBB community as it'll likely work much better and more efficiently.

Basically, until a portal mod meets MD's strict criteria then we're not going to have one available on ProphpBB.com. That's not to say we won't get one eventually, just not in the immediate future.

I would say 'Safety Concious criteria' as we don't want a portal that is full of bugs and poses a security threat from hackers because of exploits.

We also have to considering mainenance with any non-phpbb default code. When a version update is released we want to update our code base immediately, especially security related fixes. A deeply integrated modification quite often would require code changes as well, and the more of this we integrate the more difficult and delayed the update becomes. There is much more to hosting thousands of active forums than what meets the eye, we have to think of the whole group of forum admins and often have to overlook the requests of a few to sacrafice stability.

Excessive template edits, on our end... as in preparation for updates etc. Other forum hosting services have nothing to do with my previous post, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

No idea, but then I've no intention of using a portal on my forums, but then I'm a founder member of the KISS* school of internet content.
